| Digital Sea draws inspiration from the visual landscape of Bukit Batok East, its high-rise HDB blocks, lush greenery, and the moat-like water feature nearby. The colour palette echoes the hues of the surrounding blocks: teal and green, yellow and orange, and blue, weaving the artwork into the visual fabric of the neighbourhood. The wave-like forms respond playfully to the moat and bridge, while the blocky composition pays homage to the geometry of the HDB blocks. The design is also reminiscent of marbles — a childhood staple of the 80s and 90s — evoking the era when Bukit Batok East Gardens was first built, and gently encouraging a return to outdoor play and community connection, a reminder to balance the hyper-digitalisation of contemporary Singaporean life. Designed to be striking from both near and far, the mural hopes to energise the space and become a lasting landmark for the residents of Bukit Batok East. |
Public art can take various forms, from 2D wall murals and 3D sculptures to performative and ephemeral manifestations of an artist's creative process.
More importantly, the conception and premise of the artwork is rooted deeply in the public sphere, where it is widely visible and freely accessible to all.
