About the Creation grant
The Creation grant supports the creation, adaptation, and redevelopment of distinctive artistic content. Through a rigorous creation process, we aim to expand the body of works that engage audiences in Singapore and internationally.
The grant is open to individuals and collectives with a strong track record of artistic achievement and production. Applicants must be Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents, with priority given to artists who live in Singapore and actively contribute to the local arts scene.
The Creation Grant funds the development of original artistic works across performing, visual, literary, digital, and multi-disciplinary art forms.
This grant can help fund your creative process, while the (General) Presentation & Participation Grant and the Market & Audience Development Grant funds the execution and audience outreach of your artistic vision.
What the Creation grant covers
The Creation grant funds projects across performing, visual, literary, digital, and multi-disciplinary art forms for up to 18 months. It covers:
The creation of original new works.
The adaptation or redevelopment of works across artistic disciplines (e.g. from book to musical) or from other media into the arts (e.g. from film to play), with priority given to adaptations of Singapore content.
The translation of Singapore works by authors of established literary merit (preferably Asian) into any of Singapore's national languages, with priority given to translations into Singapore's official languages.
The grant is capped at $50,000 per applicant and covers direct expenses of the creation and development process. Projects that make strong use of digital technology, or that have effective national and international marketing and distribution plans, will be prioritised for funding.
The creation stage should result in a complete original work — such as a script, score, recording, exhibition, or live presentation of excerpts. Digital Arts projects should result in a prototype, playable demo, trailer, online platform, or website. For Performing and Visual Arts projects, the grant also supports a mini-showcase for potential producers and presenters, followed by a post-show discussion.
Successful applicants may then apply for the Presentation & Participation (General) Grant (P&P) to fund the production of their creative work. For overseas presentations, applicants may apply for the Market and Audience Development Grant (MAD).
Additional information for Literary Arts applicants
The Creation Grant for Literary Arts invests in works of both high literary merit and broad readership appeal. To help writers achieve this, a residency stint and editorial consultancy, while optional, are potentially supportable as part of the Creation Grant.
1. Editorial consultancy (strongly recommended)
Recipients are encouraged to appoint an editor at the start of the writing process and/or after completing their first draft. The editor plays a developmental role, acting as a sounding board throughout the writing process. You may work with an editor identified by NAC or choose your own editor, subject to NAC's approval.
2. Supported genres
The Creation Grant for Literary Arts supports the following genres: Fiction, Creative/Literary Non-Fiction (including literary biographies, memoirs, and essays on ideas, culture, and the arts), Young Adult Literature, Graphic Novel, Poetry, and Translation.
