Singapore Performing Arts Showcase in Paris

8 October – 28 November 2010

The National Arts Council (NAC) will present some of Singapore’s best performing artists and arts groups at the inaugural Singapour Festivartsin Paris from 8 October to 28 November 2010, at the Musee du Quai Branly.

The ensemble of artists featured in the performing arts showcase includes Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), The Human Expression (T.H.E) Dance Company, The Finger Players, Mark Chan & Musicians, Andrew Lum and New Asia Band, and Ramesh Meyyapan. Each of them will stage two performances at the museum auditorium.

The performing arts showcase will take place over two periods: the first burst featuring the SCO, and Andrew Lum and New Asia Band from 8 to 10 October, and the second burst consisting of performances from T.H.E Dance Company, The Finger Players, Mark Chan & Musicians and Ramesh Meyyapan, from 18 to 28 November. The Finger Players and Ramesh will also be conducting two workshops on puppetry and physical theatre respectively.

Ms Elaine Ng, NAC Director for Arts Development said “The performing arts showcase in Singapour Festivarts aims to profile Singapore as a city with cultural diversity and vibrancy as well as artistic excellence and distinctiveness. It serves as a strategic platform for promoting Singapore artists and arts groups to a sophisticated and discerning international audience.”

“As the cultural powerhouse of France, Paris stands as one of the most reputable cultural capitals in the world. Festivarts would open up exciting opportunities for Singapore artists and arts companies to work with French arts groups, venues and institutions. The showcase would also update and deepen the Parisians’ exposure, understanding and appreciation of Singapore arts,” added Ms Ng.

Singapour Festivarts is one of the major initiatives under the Singapore-France Cultural Cooperation Agreement signed in January 2009. The 10-year agreement focuses on promoting and encouraging the development of exchanges, arts residency programmes and cooperative activities in the fields of art and culture.  These activities will contribute towards Singapore’s positioning as a global city by providing greater international exposure for our artists to showcase their works in France.

About Singapour Festivarts

The Singapour Festivarts 2010/11, organised by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts in collaboration with various Singapore arts and cultural agencies, is the first in a series of showcases that will be held over the course of 10 years. This cultural exchange provides a further impetus for greater bilateral collaboration between Singapore and France in order to strengthen the ties between the two countries.

As a showcase of Singapore’s creative industries, the Festivarts also updates international perceptions of Singapore through the arts and engages in cultural diplomacy between Singapore and its international counterparts.

Centred in Paris, the target audience for the Festivarts include decision-makers and opinion leaders in arts, business and politics, the French museum- and arts-going community, French and international media, international visitors, and Singaporeans living in France.
