Open Call For 54th Venice Biennale – Singapore Pavilion 2011
Open Call For Singapore Pavilion 2011
54th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition
Seeking winning works for the most established art show in the world
The National Arts Council (NAC) is inviting artists and curators to submit proposals for the Singapore Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition in 2011. The 54th Venice Biennale, slated to take place from 4 June to 27 November next year, is directed by art historian, curator and critic Bice Curiger. This will be Singapore’s sixth consecutive participation at the biennale. The Venice Biennale is the oldest contemporary visual arts event in the world and widely regarded as the most prestigious. It has been attracting large numbers of arts and media professionals as well as tourists from around the globe since its inception in 1895. The 53rd edition had 375,702 visitors, making it the most visited art show in Italy.
NAC’s active participation in the Venice Biennale is part of its continuous efforts to develop and promote Singapore visual artists and their work internationally. Visual artist Ming Wong, who solely represented Singapore at the 53rd edition, had received a Special Mention Award (Expanding Worlds). This was also the first time a Singapore visual artist has been awarded at the biennale. Artists who have participated in previous editions include Tan Swie Hian, Matthew Ngui, Salleh Japar, Chen KeZhan, Suzann Victor, Francis Ng, Heman Chong, Lim Tzay Chuen, Tang Da Wu, Vincent Leow, Jason Lim and Zulkifle Mahmod. Past curators involved were Joanna Lee, Ahmad Mashadi, Low Sze Wee, Eugene Tan, Lindy Poh and Tang Fu Kuen.
Any artist, curator or team of artists and curators is welcome to submit their proposal. Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of Singapore. Application forms can be downloaded from the NAC website (http://www.nac.gov.sg/) or collected at its reception counter at 140 Hill Street, #03-01, Singapore 179369. All proposals must be received or postmarked no later than 24 September 2010.
Shortlisted applicants will be required to present a fully developed proposal to the Commissioning Panel comprising representatives from NAC and arts professionals during the second week of October 2010.
