Senior Minister to Officiate at Singapore Biennale 2008

Date     : 9 September 2008 (Tuesday)

Time     : 7.00pm till late

Venue   : South Beach Development, Beach Road

Take a walk down memory lane into Wonder-Land at the official opening of the second Singapore Biennale which will rekindle nostalgic memories of Singapore in the 1950s at the South Beach Development.

Officiated by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, the opening ceremony will mark the start of the premier international contemporary art event in Singapore.  Organised by the National Arts Council (NAC),Singapore Biennale 2008 (SB2008) is led by Artistic Director Fumio Nanjo and curated by Matthew Ngui and Joselina Cruz under the theme of Wonder. It will feature more than 60 artists and art collectives from over 36 countries and regions including Singapore, in a variety of historic public buildings and outdoor venues such as City Hall, South Beach Development and the Marina Bay.

The opening party promises a range of getai performances and public art presentations aimed at Singaporeans and visitors. Try reading the love notes on Cheo Chai Hiang’s impressive installation,Teh Tarik (Courting After School 1950’s Style) on the wall of art-deco Block 11 in the former Beach Road camp.  While the sign in the night sky of Gotham city is a call for superhero Batman, watch out for Deborah Kelly’s transient projection, Beware of the God, which demands that we ponder our realities and beliefs while encountering a moment of wonder and discovery. In addition, Paolo W. Tamburella will create an outdoor bathing experience with 8,000 bars of soap on-site where a man will take a shower in this massive soap-scape.

After the opening event, guests are invited to stay on to continue the revelry at SB2008 Wonder Club or move over to the SB2008 Wonder Lust Party at The Cannery, Clarke Quay.
