Aroused? Satisfy your curiosity when the Singapore Writers Festival 2005 opens with a stirring, multidimensional programme for everyone to celebrate the joy of text!
For ten days, 73 writers from Singapore and 16 other countries and regions will take you through a stimulating journey of 88 events. The Festival kicks off with a scorching performance by revolutionary Filipino-American Spoken Word group, 8th Wonder. With two albums to its name, this interdisciplinary performance group is known for performances that crackle with unbridled energy and attitude. 8th Wonder will astound Singapore with their electrifying mix of slam poetry and hip-hop music that has seized audiences throughout the United States. Their performance also marks the first ever appearance of “performative text” in the Festival.
The opening panel discussion New Asian Writing – Finding a Voice on the Global Stage follows. The speakers include Peter Goldsworthy, one of Australia's most eminent writers; Nuri Vittachi, tagged the ‘beat reporter of the offbeat’ by CNN; acclaimed Tamil poet Rudhramoorthy Cheran; Wei Hui, author of international bestseller Shanghai Baby; and young writer Rattawut Lapcharoensap, who received rave reviews for his first book, titled Sightseeing.
With the theme Text In The City, the Festival throws light on the unconventional ways text is enjoyed and encountered by many people today. Besides featuring a wider range of genres that include popular, contemporary forms of writing, such as blogging, science fiction, fantasy, food writing, travel writing and graphic novels, the Festival will also titillate the urban dweller’s mind with talks, readings, workshops, film screenings, literary-based performances, graffiti works, book launches by local writers, and sms writing and online competitions.
Other renowned international authors gracing the Festival include Goenawan Mohamad, Yu Hua, Manju Kapur, Doris Pilkington, Dominique Wolton, Alberto Ruy-Sanchez, Robert J. Sawyer, Bruce Sterling and Norman Spinrad. Singapore writers include You Jin, Meira Chand, Huang Kaide, Ng King Kang, Michael Vatikiotis, Isa Kamari, Felix Cheong, Elangovan and Cyril Wong.
