The visual arts event of the year, SENI Singapore 2004 opens on 1 October 2004 with works by over 90 artists from 14 countries and regions. Singaporeans and visitors will be treated to a visual arts extravaganza, with various opportunities to sample and interact with contemporary art produced by some of Asia’s cutting-edge artists.
SENI Singapore 2004 presents ideas and creates active dialogues between Singapore and international artists through a focus on contemporary Southeast Asian and Asian art. It aims to further nurture our visual arts talents, capabilities and audiences nationally, regionally and internationally.
Based on the theme “Art and the Contemporary”, the festival consists of five existing art projects - main exhibition Home Fronts showcases the works of 10 artist collectives from South-East Asia and Asia; Multimedia Art Asia Pacific (MAAP) in Singapore presents a series of eight exhibitions by digital media artists; City Art Project has three interactive exhibitions integrated into the public urban landscape; moving pictures features a contemporary video art exhibition; and Insomnia48 offers 48 hours of action-packed activities. There will also be a symposium to provide a critical insight into the concepts of “the contemporary” with a focus on developments in Asia.
SENI Singapore 2004 is jointly organised by the National Arts Council and the Singapore Art Museum of the National Heritage Board, with partners TheatreWorks and Multimedia Art Asia Pacific, and sponsored by Lee Foundation and Singapore Tourism Board.
