The Architecture of Silence

On 29 May 2008, acclaimed choreographer, dancer and director Edward Clug unites the forces of the Slovene National Opera and two Ballet houses – SNG Maribor and SNG Ljubljana, with the Singapore Festival Orchestra (SFO) in the Gala Concert of the Singapore Arts Festival 2008. A monumental performance featuring 45 ballet dancers, 80 singers and 66 instrumentalists, the Asian premiere of The Architecture of Silence is one of the largest meetings of dance and musical forces ever on the stage at the Esplanade Theatre.

 

VIPs attending the gala performance include Mr S R Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore, and his wife; Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts; BG (NS) George Yeo, Minister for Foreign Affairs; Dr Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence; Mr Gan Kim Yong, Acting Minister for Manpower and RADM (NS) Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts and Minister for Education. Other guests include Members of Parliament, Ambassadors and High Commissioners, Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers, artists, sponsors and media.

 

In The Architecture of Silence, Clug creates a rich mosaic of expressions with images from timeless iconography, while bridging the 200-year gap between Requiem by Mozart andRequiem for My Friend by contemporary Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner.

 

The SFO’s performance in The Architecture of Silence marks the first of three programmes in the Festival. Proving its versatile personality and vocabulary, the SFO will also feature inThe Lord of the Rings Symphony and Festival Fantasia 2008.

 

The Architecture of Silence will run till 31 May. Clug will give a post-show dialogue on 30 May and conduct a workshop on 31 May at 11am.
