Singapore’s very first professional puppet theatre company, The Finger Players, returns to the Singapore Arts Festival with the world premiere of Wong Kar Wai Dreams. Inspired by the films of Hong Kong’s illustrious art house film director Wong Kar Wai, the work infuses the recurrent themes of Wong’s classic films - of secrets, unrequited love, hidden memories and missed chances - into a multidisciplinary theatrical performance with the hallmarks of The Finger Players’ blend of human actors, puppetry and stunning visuals.
The performance will be directed by 2006 Young Artist Award recipient Chong Tze Chien, whose work with the company in Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea earned him the award for Best Director at the 6th Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards. Prior to joining The Finger Players as Company Director in 2004, Chong was a company playwright with The Necessary Stage and his plays have been read and dramatised abroad in places such as the United Kingdom and Malaysia. In Wong Kar Wai Dreams, Chong displays his writing talents once again in a unique script that blurs the boundary between reality and fiction. Chong’s versatility is also demonstrated in the multilayered set that he designed to complement his work.
Joining him will be a team of creative individuals who are recognised for their contributions to the local theatre scene – Darren Ng, Associate Sound Designer for The Finger Players, lighting designer Lim Woan Wen, and puppet designer and conceptualist Oliver Chong. In the 6th Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards 2006, both Ng and Lim were awarded the coveted awards for Best Sound Designer and Best Lighting Design respectively. A multi-talented individual, Chong’s set design for The Finger Players’ Twisted was nominated for Best Set Design at the Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards that same year, while his directorial effort in I’m Just a Piano Teacher put him in the running for Best Director at the 7th Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards.
Performing in English, Mandarin and Cantonese is a robust cast comprising theatre veterans Karen Tan, Serene Chen, Christina Sergeant and Loong Seng Onn. Renowned for her wide spectrum of acting credits, Tan returns to work with The Finger Players in her second production with the company after First Family while Chen was most recently seen in her role in the local film Singapore Dreaming.
