Singapore Arts Festival 2007: Festival Residency Paves the Way
Award-winning Scottish music theatre company, Theatre Cryptic and the internationally acclaimed T’ang Quartet from Singapore have embarked on a residency at the Drama Centre from 5 to 23 March 2007. This residency paves the way for a performance that will challenge preconceptions of how classical music is presented.
To premiere on 31 May 2007, Optical Identity is a co-production commissioned and presented by the Singapore Arts Festival. Aiming to present music to be looked at, not just listened to, the performance directed by Cathie Boyd of Theatre Cryptic will combine established repertoire and music commissions with interactive technologies which respond to the Quartet’s playing and movements.
This is the third residency offered by the Singapore Arts Festival. It continues the Festival’s focus of championing new and exciting work, while facilitating cross-cultural international collaboration. Other renowned artists who have devised productions while in local residency include dance virtuoso Akram Khan, and Wim Vandekeybus, one of Europe’s most established choreographers. The Akram Khan Co.’s work, ma, made its international debut at the Singapore Arts Festival 2004 before being critically acclaimed in international tours, while Vandekeybus’ dance ensemble Ultima Vez, produced Puur for the Singapore Arts Festival 2005 and subsequently performed at France’s eminent Festival d’Avignon.
