Singapore’s groundbreaking dance choreographer Angela Liong joins hands with Park Ho-bin, "Best Young Choreographer" and scholarship recipient from the Korean Culture & Arts Foundation, in a cross-cultural co-commissioned dance project 12 SMS Across the Mountains.
Making its premiere in the 7th Seoul International Dance Festival in 2004, 12 SMS Across the Mountains depicts how modern communications transcend physical frontiers and barriers through the pervasive mobile messaging technology Short Message Service (SMS). Central to the theme of this collaborative piece is the new Asian urbanites’ confined sense of space which contradicts their traditional cultural and physical environment.
This multi-media dance piece comprising 12 dance vignettes is a culmination of travels and exchanges between Angela Liong of The Arts Fission Company and Park Ho-bin of South Korea’s Dance Theatre CcadoO, following initial discussions that began in 2003. The creative work of South Korea visual director Choi Jong Bum and Singapore choreographer/set designer Elysa Wendi further highlights the cosmopolitan dimension of the Singapore-Korea collaboration. Drawing inspiration from American pop-art pioneer Roy Lichtenstein’s last series of paintings based on traditional Chinese landscape scrolls, the staging concept accentuates the production’s references to the contrasting dynamics of low circular island Singapore and mountainous South Korea.
Performed by five Korean male dancers and five female Singapore dancers, the powerful interplay of energy in 12 SMS Across the Mountains will set you thinking about the notion of urban communication.
