Ever wanted to know how it feels to be confined in a prison environment? Set in an intimate prison setting of cold cells, steel and closed-circuit cameras, Impenjarament offers a rare and unique insight into prison culture. Put yourself in the voyeuristic and suppressive experience of life in a penitentiary.
Confined in prison, eight men each with a dark past contemplate a potentially darker future; examining ideas of masculinity, machismo and eroticism of the Malay psyche. As they try to salvage what little dignity they have left, the notion of personal freedom is turned on its head.
Under the direction of Aidli 'Alin' Mosbit, a prolific female playwright and director, Impenjarament was conceptualised by Teater Ekamatra’s Artistic Director Noor Effendy Ibrahim. The staging includes a special set that will provide part of the soundscape of the performance. Combined with fusion Malay dance, silat (Malay martial arts) and live music, the production employs movement choreography by Gani Karim and live music composed by Zubir Abdullah.
Impenjarament is a devised ensemble performance, produced by Teater Ekamatra, Singapore’s leading contemporary Malay theatre companies. A physical and multi-lingual theatrical piece featuring a multi-talented cast from Singapore, India and Indonesia, Impenjarament is set to deliver an unlikely message of hope and kindness.
