“Pietragalla’s ability to mesmerize an audience into utter, stupefied fascination is legendary.”

– The Japan Times

Multi-talented renowned French dancer and choreographer, Marie-Claude Pietragalla and the Singapore Dance Theatre, give a new lease of life to Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s exacting musical masterpieces in Stravinsky Dances.

Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) and Les Noces (The Wedding) represent two of Stravinsky’s greatest achievements and are also widely regarded as some of the most controversial, yet captivating pieces ever written for dance.  The Rite of Spring stirred up the audience so much at its world premiere in May 1913 that they broke into into fights and dancers of the Ballets Russes could not hear their cues from the music.  Les Noces, written for vocal and two groups of percussion with four pianos, examines the social implications and expectations behind a bride’s wedding preparations. Pietragalla seeks to break away from previous interpretations of these two masterpieces and inject her own brilliant and vivid choreography.

A former star dancer of the Paris Opera Ballet, Pietragalla has not only performed famous classical roles, but also worked with some of the most distinguished choreographers such as Jiri Kylian, Martha Graham and Robert Wilson.  Reputed for her iridescent beauty and arresting stage presence, the dynamic talent is also accomplished in other areas, having directed a fashion event, written books, endorsed beauty products and appeared in the lead role in a film.  Pietragalla also has her own brand of ballet shoes.

Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Les Noces together with Pietragalla’s innovative choreography adds to the Singapore Dance Theatre’s diverse repertoire, presenting yet another showcase of the company’s versatility.  Resident Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Chorus, Lim Yau, together with the State Choir “Latvija” and pianists Shane Thio, Lim Yan, Eleanor Tan and Beatrice Lin, will perform the music for Les Noces.

The rare collaboration and magnificent musical masterpieces of the 20th Century promise an arresting event for both dance and music lovers alike.
