Post-show Dialogue with Meredith Monk
"Mercy…what this intensely moving, drop-dead gorgeous, can’t-be-categorised fluid piece of meditative music, movement and milieu presents is an immersion into the process of transcendence." ~ Los Angeles Times
"… After much grave, earnest, disquieting beauty, the quality of ‘Mercy’ seemed the essence of humanity."
~ Los Angeles Times
The Singapore Arts Festival 2003 is pleased to invite volunteers to perform at the Asian premiere ofMercy, a music theatre produced by multidisciplinary artist Meredith Monk in collaboration with site-specific installation artist Ann Hamilton. The American production is looking for 35 men and women of all ages, sizes and ethnic groups from Singapore to participate in their performances on 14 and 15 June at Victoria Theatre. This will be a great opportunity for anyone who is interested to be part of the Festival and to gain performing experience.
An audition will be held on Thursday, 12 June at 6pm at Victoria Theatre. Volunteers will be participating in three major roles in the performance. A group of 20 performers are required for the role, "Paraders". As this group will be required to perform dance movements on stage, performers are expected to be agile. About 10 performers are needed for the role, "ta-ta-ta’ers", in which they will be seated among the audience and trained to produce sounds to co-ordinate with the performance on stage. Some five performers will also be needed to fill in the role of ‘refugees’. Students from the performing arts and the visual arts programmes are welcome to participate in these roles.
Rehearsals will be held on Thursday, 12 June from 7pm onwards and Friday, 13 June, from 9.30am to 12pm and from 6pm onwards. All performers must be present from 12pm onwards for the actual performances on 14 June and from 6pm onwards on 15 June. Volunteers must be able to commit to all dates and times stated for rehearsals and performances.
Interested applicants are required to send in their recent photographs and resumes stating name, age, gender, race, nationality, occupation, height, weight, and contact numbers. Applicants are also required to provide details on their involvement in the arts, as well as whether they have received any formal or informal training in performing arts, or visual arts programmes. All resumes have to reach Ms Cheong Wai Cheng, Senior Arts Administrator (Festival), at the National Arts Council, 140 Hill Street, #03-01, MITA Building, Singapore 179369, by 31 May. For enquiries, please contact Rany at 68379542 or 98779601.
