Prime Minister to Open Singapore Biennale 2006

 Date :  1 September 2006 (Friday)
 Time :  6pm till late
 Venue :  The Padang

On the evening of 1 September, Singapore’s historical Padang will become the site for the biggest party for contemporary art ever organised in Singapore. Officiated by Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong, it will celebrate the opening of the Singapore Biennale 2006 (SB2006), the nation’s first and most important international contemporary art event of its time. The event will mark the start of the 2½ month long exhibition, curated by a team led by Artistic Director Fumio Nanjo under the theme of “Belief”. Featuring 195 artworks created by 95 artists and artist collectives, it will be spread across 19 exhibition venues and sites.

Planned for the opening party are a range of performances and public art presentations aimed at Singaporeans and visitors from all cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. Included in the line-up are new works by Jenny Holzer and Usman Haque who will be using the City Hall and Marina skyline as backdrops to their commissions respectively. City Hall at dusk will serve as a canvas for Holzer’s large-scale text projections in her work For Singapore.  Haque’s work for the Biennale, Open Burble, features an immense 60 meter ladder-like wall of 1000 LED illuminated helium balloons. The actions of the public at the Padang will trigger the LEDS of the towering balloon wall.

Other artists who will be performing include Pratchaya Phinthong, Jonathan Allen, Ana Prvacki, Yason Banal (& a Singaporean Death Metal Band) and Sontol Al Loyo aka Rizman Putra. The Yayoi Kusama Fashion Parade will also be presented in collaboration with talents from local design schools.

Hosted by Najip Ali, party-goers will be in for a treat as SB2006 artists and curators turn DJs for the night and spin their favourite tunes, before Ministry of Sound DJs take to the decks to bring the night to a rousing end. For a full list of events, refer to Annex 1.
