National Honours for 10 Singapore Artists
Ivan Heng, Mohamed Latiff Mohamed and Tsung Yeh received the Cultural Medallion (CM) from President Tony Tan Keng Yam this evening.
At a ceremony at the Istana, seven others received the Young Artist Award (YAA) from Acting Minister, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Mr Lawrence Wong. They were: Bani Haykal, Chua Yew Kok, Grace Tan, Koh Hui Ling, M. Zaki Razak, Ruth Ling and Zul Othman (ZERO).
Ms Yvonne Tham, NAC’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer said: “The artistic excellence achieved by each of these Cultural Medallion recipients has won them critical acclaim both at home and abroad. The impact of their work in theatre, literary arts and music is clearly felt in the way each has inspired audiences and the next generation of art makers alike. We also recognise the outstanding work of our Young Artist Award recipients and trust that this Award will further fuel their artistic trajectory and break new ground.”
Both CM and YAA recipients will have access to grants to facilitate their continued efforts in championing the development of their artistic practice and reaching out to Singaporeans through their art form. The grant quantum for YAA recipients to undertake arts projects or studies within two years of receiving the award is $20,000. The grant allocated to each CM recipient from the Cultural Medallion Fund, to be used for a single project or multiple projects over the recipient's lifetime, is $80,000.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet the CM recipients and hear their personal stories, at Cultural Medallion Speaker Series, first introduced last year. Over a tea-time panel conversation at the National Library on 23 November 2013 (Saturday), the CM recipients will share the influences that have shaped their artistic endeavours, as well as discuss issues such as what defines Singapore art.
