National Indian Music Competition (NIMC) 2014 Now Open for Registration

8th edition of the competition returns with new Hindustani Vocal Category

Singapore, 17 January 2014 – The National Arts Council (NAC) is pleased to announce the 2014 National Indian Music Competition (NIMC) open call for registration. Now in its 8th edition, the triennial competition is Singapore’s key national platform to identify and develop talented musicians in the Indian classical music scene.

2          For the first time, the NIMC will introduce a new category for Hindustani Vocal, hoping to reach out to more talented individuals who specialise in vocals in the Indian classical musical scene. Selected participants across the eight Indian instrument categories will have the opportunity to showcase their musical ability before an international panel of judges, as well as perform in the final Prize Winners’ Concert on 21 June.

3          In addition, the competition will increase its cash prizes for all winners across the categories (up to $2,000 for Open Category first prize winners), to promote greater participation and recognition for their talents and efforts. Finalists who show promise and potential may also receive Honourable Mentions.

4          Says Elaine Ng, Director for Sector Development, NAC, "Indian music and culture remain a strong part of our Singapore heritage, and the National Indian Music Competition is an important and prestigious platform for us to celebrate our tradition through musical talent and excellence. The competition is also evolving to accommodate growing interest in the Indian Music sector. For example, we have expanded our competition to include new categories, as we have observed that there is an increase in the number of people and students practising Hindustani Vocal in recent years. We hope to continually raise competition standards, as well as drive greater interest among new audiences."

5          From now till 21 March 2014, interested participants can apply for the competition at Please refer to the competition factsheet in the Appendix.
