Make A Loud Noise!
Noise Singapore Festival 2005
30 September – 30 October 2005
Young aspiring talents will have a free brand new avenue for artistic creation! Noise Singapore is an ‘arts festival’ for young people, by young people. Using everyday communication tools, the Internet and mass media, Noise Singapore provides a chance for anyone below the age of 25 to become an artist, designer, photographer, film maker, composer, musician, animator or poet.
The first festival sans venues, Noise Singapore taps on the pervasive presence of common communication channels, like the Internet, radio, television, newspapers and mobile phones, to provide an alternative accessible platform to showcase creative works by young people to a wide audience. All kinds of works, from scripts, literary writings, art, music compositions, films, paintings and designs, can be showcased to the public on these media channels for free. Given the technological application of the various media, the types of creative works that can be produced and presented on Noise is expanded to include works for digital and mobile media such as mobile ring tunes, animation, online games and blogs.
Participants can submit fresh and original content in four Noise categories: Images, Mobile, Sounds and Words. A series of hands-on workshops, talks and seminars on the various categories will be held in the months of May, June and July to acquaint participants with the creative possibilities. A panel of industry experts and arts practitioners will select the best original and creative works from each category.
In October, selected works will be showcased live across various print, radio, television and online media in a month-long Noise Singapore festival. Noise Singapore kicks off on the weekend of 30 September to 2 October with a series of events at the Youth Park to profile the successful young talents of Noise Singapore. Participants with selected works for the categories of MTV Logos (Images Category), Graffiti Art (Images Category), Mobile Tunes, Pixs and Videos (Mobile Category) and blogs (Words Category) stand to win exciting prizes, as well as have their winning designs featured on Noise Singapore media and technology partners’ channels. All selected creative works will be showcased on various participating media including the Noise Singapore website for the entire month.
“Noise Singapore aims to unearth fresh talent and inspire groundbreaking content from youths in Singapore. It is the modern creative canvas that invites young people from all walks of life to actively participate in artistic creativity instead of just being passive audiences. The technological and media platforms give Noise the potential to be an exciting, all-embracing, wide-ranging talent-scouting marketplace for fresh, original creative works and talents in Singapore,” says Lee Suan Hiang, Chief Executive Officer, National Arts Council.
Singapore is the first international partner and Asian chapter of a global Noise network initiated by the Australia Council for the Arts. The United Kingdom is the other country to join the global Noise network in 2006. All three participating Noise countries will be connected online, giving rise to possibilities for online collaborations between artists on different continents, and for international businesses to ‘talent spot’ from this huge pool of fresh talent.
The National Arts Council is delighted to have MTV Networks Asia as an official sponsor for Noise Singapore and a key media partner. “MTV welcomes Noise Singapore as an initiative that brings youth and the creative arts closer, providing a platform to showcase their talent. We are excited at being part of this inaugural and unique media-based festival and encourage young people to take on this challenge in setting a new creative benchmark for Singapore,” commented Mr Frank Brown, President of MTV Networks Asia Pacific.
MobileOne (M1) is a major information technology partner for Noise Singapore. M1 is sponsoring the ringtone, wallpaper and mobile video competitions within the Mobile category. Mr Neil Montefiore, Chief Executive Officer of M1, says, “The mobile phone is already an essential communications tool and an ubiquitous lifestyle accessory for our young people. Noise Singapore introduces another element that M1 fully supports, and that is a fun and creative way for our young to express themselves using mobile technology.”
In conjunction with NOISE Singapore, tertiary institutions have been invited to showcase their best students’ works in a special showcase called SHOUT!, on the Noise Singapore website. To date, all the 5 polytechnics, 3 arts schools and a university have confirmed their participation in this school showcase.
