7 September 2010 – Drumming enthusiasts from various community centres (CCs) around the island have been brought together by the National Arts Council’s Arts For All Community Engagement Plan to form a Community Drumming Network (CDN).
The inaugural event organised by the CDN, titled Celebration of Drums, will include hands-on engagement of the public and audiences in drumming, as well as performances by established drumming groups ZingO Festival Drum Group, Singapore Dhol Federation, Lila Drums and Mamady Keita Asia Pacific Performers.
The network, consisting of 6 founding CC members, namely Cairnhill CC, Clementi CC, Jurong Green CC, Kallang CC, Kolam Ayer CC and West Coast CC, was formed by a group of enthusiastic and capable community partners who have partnered NAC in promoting drumming through Arts For All workshops and Arts Community Tours. CDN is bringing together close to 200 drumming enthusiasts from around the island to celebrate at this inaugural event and hopes to build its network’s membership to further develop and promote drumming interest in Singapore.
Chairman of the CDN, Mr Justin Foo (Vice Chairman, Clementi CCC) says of the Arts For All programme and the CDN, “The Arts For All programme has raised awareness among the community that the arts can be found in everyday life, and that there are no barriers to appreciating or engaging in the arts. The community drumming activities attract not only individual participants, but their families as well, building social cohesion through a communal activity. The Community Drumming Network will enable us to tap on greater resources from other members to bring the arts to the grassroots level and bonding communities through the shared interest in drumming while providing an avenue for meaningful engagement with the arts.”
Launched in October 2008, Arts For All Community Engagement Plan aims to cultivate a lifelong interest in the arts by reaching out to various segments of the population in Singapore through a variety of arts activities. These include workshops, community arts tours and mass participation performances involving the public. CDN will further the aims of the Arts For All programme, increasing community engagement and arts appreciation at the grassroots level through accessible art forms such as drumming. It will raise awareness of the benefits of community drumming by organising community drumming activities and performances, and involving more drumming enthusiasts in the network.
