Singapore Art Show 2005

23 Sep – 23 Oct 2005

Hailed as the new national visual arts platform to celebrate local visual art and artists, the Singapore Art Show 2005 promises to be an exciting event showcasing a wide range of distinctive and outstanding artworks by Singaporean artists for art lovers and the ordinary man on the street. Organised by the National Arts Council, the emphasis this year is Art is for Everyone! Anyone can appreciate art and through a series of exhibitions and participatory activities, Singaporeans young and old will definitely find something they like and have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate local visual art.

The Singapore Art Show will feature a range of art from the traditional to contemporary, as well as works from Singapore’s pioneer artists to those being produced by local artists today. The Singapore Art Show is the biggest curated local arts show to date with exhibitions spreading over various locations on the island, giving Singaporeans easier access and bringing art to their doorstep. This is also the first time that a local art show has engaged such a large number of curators, highlighting their importance and acknowledging their role and creativity in the arts.

As Singapore gains more prominence regionally and internationally, creativity and visual and performance arts are becoming a larger part of Singapore’s identity. The Singapore Art Show will only serve to enhance this movement. With the involvement of artists, curators and visual art businesses in Singapore, SAS will further enhance the awareness and prominence of Singapore’s capabilities and achievements in the visual art internationally

“The Singapore Art Show 2005 represents the development of the visual art community in Singapore as we become a Global City for the Arts. This show offers a holistic view of local visual art and is also a shift for local art and artists as they move onto a bigger platform and are celebrated in this significant manner”, said Mr. Lee Suan Hiang, Chief Executive Officer, National Arts Council.

The official launch of the Singapore Art Show will be held on 27 September at the Singapore Management University and will be officiated by Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts.
