A Blend of the Old and New: Rekindling Memories at Refurbished Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall

The National Arts Council (NAC) today unveiled the designs for two of Singapore’s grand old dames of the performing arts scene - Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall.

In planning the refurbishment, due consideration has been given to the historic significance of the monument’s place in Singapore’s cultural heritage and our shared memories of it.

Guided by the principles of refurbishment, restoration and redevelopment, the designs will conserve the buildings’ heritage elements while modernising facilities and amenities, offering everyone a memorable experience characterised by a blend of the old and new.

The designs will enhance audience experience, provide improved facilities and performance spaces for the artists, and create conducive gathering places for the public. Details of some of the key changes are at Annex A.

Mr Benson Puah, Chief Executive Officer, National Arts Council said, “The  careful refurbishment of the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall will re-connect these two very special venues with our public who grew up either attending performances or performing in them. When completed, the inviting intimacy of these beautiful halls will help create even more fond memories for many generations to come. I hope that these exquisite jewels of the Civic District will remind us of the richness of our shared history and heritage. These are places where collective memories are made and shared”.
