At this year’s prestigious Arts Awards Ceremony, local filmmaker and former Young Artist Award recipient for Film, Eric Khoo, will make his ascent to the ranks of the Cultural Medallion holders, alongside prolific Malay literary writer Isa Kamari. Five young practitioners of different art forms will also be accorded the Young Artist Award. Conferring the Cultural Medallion will be President S R Nathan, while Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, will present the Young Artist Award to the talented recipients at the ceremony.
First instituted in 1979, the Cultural Medallion award recognises individuals who have attained excellence in their respective artistic fields. Cultural Medallion recipients are also each eligible for the Cultural Medallion Grant, a prestigious $80,000 award that aids each recipient in undertaking an arts project. The Grant, established in 2001, is bestowed only once in an artist’s lifetime. It strives to raise the artists’ profiles, as well as encourage their continuous creation of original works. As of 2006, 88 artists have received the Cultural Medallion award.
The Young Artist Award honours artists, aged 35 years old and below, who have shown promise of artistic merit. As of 2006, 86 artists have received the Award since its first inception in 1992. The recipients of the 2007 Young Artist Award are:
Kuik Swee Boon (Dance)
Ting Kheng Siong (Literature)
Philip Tan Chin Wen (Music)
Natalie Hennedige (Theatre)
Tan Kai Syng (Visual Arts)
Six specialist panels for film, literature, dance, music, theatre and visual arts were set up to evaluate nominations for the awards. There were 33 nominees for the Cultural Medallion and 41 nominees for the Young Artist Award this year.
