Over nineteen weeks, students from 29 primary schools and kindergartens submitted some 200 handcrafted puppets and masks for the 2005 National Arts Council (NAC)-Thumbs Up Art Competition – “Let’s Do Drama”.

Asian folklore was the theme for this year’s competition. Using an inventive array of materials (including hairpins, chopsticks and fruit wrappings), these pint-sized artists created puppets and masks depicting famous characters from Asian mythology and literature. Participants are divided into two categories: Group A for Primary 5 and 6 students, and Group B for Primary 4 and below.

Sixty-two of these original submissions will receive awards at a prize presentation ceremony-cum-exhibition this Saturday. The Creativity Award, Workmanship Award and Environmentalist Award will be presented to a total of 23 recipients. They will each receive an ‘Artistic Apple’ trophy, specially designed by Cultural Medallion recipient Tan Swie Hian. Consolation prizes and Special Awards will also be presented to students who have submitted good works. Competition judges, Mr Ong Kian Sin (The Finger Players) and Mr Sim Pern Yiau (Dramabox), who judged submissions on their creativity, choice of materials, aesthetics and textual description on how the artworks were inspired, will present the awards to all winners.
