2005 ARTS AWARDS CEREMONY

Five individuals will be presented with the Cultural Medallion at this year’s Arts Awards Ceremony.  Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, will also present the Young Artist Award to seven recipients at the same ceremony.

 

The Arts Awards, comprising the Cultural Medallion and the Young Artist Award, have from this year expanded its scope in response to the increasingly overlapping boundaries of arts practices and multi-disciplinary art forms.  Under four broad categories of film, literary arts, performing arts and visual arts, nominations are now accepted for a wide variety of genres including for the first time, art forms such as multi-media art, technical theatre and pop music.

 

First instituted in 1979, the Cultural Medallion award is conferred by the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, to recognise individuals who have attained artistic excellence. To date, 81 artists have been conferred the Award. The recipients of the 2005 Cultural Medallion are:

  1. Jack Neo Chee Keong (Film)
  2. M Balakrishnan (Literature)
  3. Dick Lee (Music)
  4. Chng Seok Tin (Visual Arts)
  5. Lee Wen (Visual Arts)

 

The Young Artist Award recognises artists, aged 35 years old and below, who have shown promise of artistic excellence. To date 71 artists have been conferred the Award. The recipients of the 2005 Young Artist Award are:

  1. Alvin Pang (Literature)
  2. Cyril Wong (Literature)
  3. Aaron Khek Ah Hock (Dance)
  4. Katryna Tan (Music)
  5. Li Xie (Theatre)
  6. Heman Chong (Visual Arts)
  7. Michael Lee Hong Hwee (Visual Arts)

 

Six specialist panels for film, literature, dance, music, theatre and art were set up to evaluate nominations for the awards.  There were 28 nominees for the Cultural Medallion and 36 nominees for the Young Artist Award.
