Six outstanding artists will receive the prestigious Arts Awards from Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts at The Istana this year.
The 2004 Cultural Medallion will be conferred on photographer Teo Bee Yen, 54, widely acknowledged as one of the top photographers in the world. Teo has twice achieved Fellowship status of the Royal Photographic Society, a feat unsurpassed by anyone in the international photography community.
First instituted in 1979, the Cultural Medallion is conferred by the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts on individuals who have attained artistic excellence. To date, 80 artists have been conferred the Cultural Medallion Award.
The Young Artist Award recognises artists, aged 35 years old and below, who have demonstrated promise of artistic excellence. To date, 66 artists have been conferred the Young Artist Award. The recipients of the 2004 Young Artist Award are:
- Chan Yoong Han, 30 (Music)
- Ling Hock Siang, 34 (Music)
- Tan Chee Lay, 31 (Literature)
- Danny Tan Koon Meng, 33 (Dance)
- Tang Ling Nah, 32 (Art)
Seven specialist panels for art, music, theatre, photography, dance, literature and film were set up to evaluate nominations for the awards. There were 16 nominees for the Cultural Medallion and 39 nominees for the Young Artist Award.
