The National Arts Council, Singapore
formed in Sep 1991 currently manages three theatres and an
atrium. They are Kallang Theatre, Victoria Theatre, The Drama
Centre.
The theatre booking online (TBO) system is currently catered
for the booking of all the above venues except the Drama Centre
due to its closure in July 2002 to make way for the expansion
of the Singapore History Museum.
The Drama Centre adds to Singapore's stable of
world-class purpose built performing arts space with its
615-seat proscenium theatre. It also offers an intimate
120-seater black box, VIP and function rooms to meet the
demands of the diverse range of today’s arts events –
from the mid-sized theatrical presentation with stringent
technical requirements, to intimate performances, talks
and exhibitions.
The theatre is equipped with state-of-the-art lighting,
rigging and sound systems. It also has an orchestra pit
on a lift that can also form a front stage extension.
With its plush seats and good acoustics, audiences are
assured of a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The
function area and its VIP lounge with exclusive facilities
such as bar, pantry and toilets are excellent for seminars,
meetings and private functions. A bar and box office located
at the foyer are additional means by which the Drama Centre
aims to assure patrons of the highest standards of service.
Built at Fort Canning Park on the site originally for
the Singapore Council for Adult Education, Drama Centre
was the key platform for local companies starting out
in the early 80s, staging landmark Singapore plays like
Lao Jiu(italicise), Army Daze(italicise) and Mail Order
Brides(italicise). The co-location of the new Drama Centre
in the National Library building creates an unprecedented
synergy with the arts facilities, attractions, institutions
and the commercial sector to enliven the surrounding area.
The grand old dame of Singapore theatres, the Victoria
Theatre has long been a focal point for Singapore's arts and
cultural activities. This 19th century British neo-classical
architecture houses an auditorium with a seating capacity of
904. The theatre also has an orchestra pit that can accommodate
up to 30 musicians. It is ideal for performances of dance,
drama, classical and modern ballet, opera as well as other
events. It has sufficient stage lighting and sound equipment
to undertake various kinds of performances, and support facilities
include a cafeteria and 2 function rooms that can take up to
20 and 150 standing guests respectively.
Victoria Theatre has been the venue for many local and foreign
shows. They included ACTION Theatre's Chang & Eng ,
Asian premiere of David Hwang's Golden Child , rock
musical Rent by the Singapore Repertory Theatre and
many others.
