Over the course of 4 weeks, 25 ticketed productions and more than 450 free outdoor activities entertained and inspired Singaporeans from all walks of life.
Since 2005, the Singapore Art Show (SAS) has been a dedicated, biannual national platform for local and Singapore-based visual artists and art practices, showcasing distinctive and outstanding works to audiences in Singapore and the region.
SAS provides an umbrella platform for different voices in the wider community – artists, art groups, institutions, private collections, art businesses and collectors. The project aims to catalyse new Singapore artistic content, build connectivity between the commercial and non-commercial aspects of the visual arts, boost the artistic and business vibrancy of the local visual arts industry and increase the visual arts appreciation standard of Singaporeans.
While showcasing excellence in Singapore art, SAS is also a critical platform for developing Singapore’s artistic talents. Its various programmes provide the opportunity to discover and nurture artists, as well as develop the capabilities of young curators and writers. From experimental projects to re-presentations of traditional and ethnic forms, SAS presents a strong and distinctive line-up with something for everyone.
SAS 2007 involved more than 400 artists and featured over 700 artworks. Spread over 47 venues, the festival attracted 616,000 attendees, with 31 partner programmes and five satellite events
Now in its third edition, SAS 2009 addresses the diverse needs of the visual arts industry by providing multiple niche and targeted platforms befitting the breath and depth of local visual artists and artworks. The 3 main components include Singapore Art Exhibition, Art Prize and Curating Labs. Peripheral events include independent ad hoc programmes and engaging initiatives from arts groups, institutions, individuals and corporations. Other satellite events in both lifestyle and the art arena will also be featured.

This highly creative and interactive festival targets to reach out to more than 20,000 people and is an excellent platform for sponsors to participate and reach out to the public. The next festival is from 24 October to 1 November 2009. Golden Point Award 2009 applications open from 11 March to 29 May 2009.

This mega art exhibition draws wide global attention, as it provides excellent opportunities for local and international art communities, arts businesses as well as diverse arts audiences to interact, collaborate and be engaged in the world of contemporary art.

This will be conducted through the Encounters series of talks, workshops, artist residencies and events. In addition, a series of education projects focusing on primary and secondary school children will accompany the Biennale.
Wonder is the theme for SB2008. Through contemporary art, Wonder calls on us to question and be curious; to reach beyond the surface, surpassing the apparent and to allow ourselves be surprised, awed, tantalised and challenged.
The Singapore Biennale in 2008 featured 137 pieces of exciting and accessible artworks by 66 artists and artist collectives from 36 countries and regions and attracted a total of 505,200 visitors over eight weeks. It excited Singaporeans about contemporary art and got them engaged and inspired. On the international front, it attracted strong participation of international artists, artistic directors, curators, critics, academics and biennale organisers. It was a critical platform for exchange and dialogue between Singapore and the global arts community; more than half of our participating local artists were subsequently invited to showcase their works around the world. Not only did it raise the profile of Singapore art, it positioned Singapore strongly as a vibrant global city for the arts and placed Singapore on the world map.

The biennial National Piano & Violin Competition attracted more than 274 entries in 2007 and it has been increasing with each competition. It also reaches out to a large local and regional audience. It is dedicated to develop the performing skills of our young talents and to raise the standards of musicianship. Furthermore, it is the only platform that offers talented young Singapore musicians to compete at a national level, and to perform before an international jury.
This competition has successfully discovered and produced talents such as the T'ang Quartet and Lee Huei Min (the first young Asian classical violinist to recently sign a recording contract with Universal). Several other identified young talents have gone onto pursue music studies in renowned music institutions such as The Yehudi Menuhin School (UK), Chetham's School of Music (UK) and Peabody Conservatory (US).
The National Piano & Violin Competition 2009 will be held in December 2009.
The biennial National Indian Music Competition will take place in 2010 to spot more of Singapore’s burgeoning pool of Indian music talents. Since the Competition started in 1998, it has seen a three-fold increase in the number of entries and brought new excellent talents in various instruments into the fore of the local music scene. Winners of the Competition also enjoy an immediate showcase of their proficiency at the Prize Winners’ Concert.
The Competition is organised by the National Arts Council to develop and upgrade Singapore musicians’ standards and skills, as well as to identify potential talents in Indian music. It also provides opportunities for musicians to perform in a competitive situation, help nurture the talent pool for Indian music in Singapore and sustain the interest and appreciation of this ethnic art form. It attracts over 60 entries and reaches out to more than 1000 audiences each time.
The National Indian Music Competition will be held in September 2010.
The biennial National Chinese Music Competition will be in 2010 as an exciting artistic platform to showcase the range of Chinese music talents. Since the Competition was revamped in 1998, it has seen a double-fold increase in the number of entries to a total of 378 participants in year 2008. The standard of the competition has also increased with winners performing better repertoires and impressing judges with their skills.
This National Chinese Music Competition has been gaining prominence in the Singapore Chinese music scene and it reaches out to more than 3,000 audiences each time.
The National Chinese Music Competition will be held in December 2010.
Occupying the 2nd to 6th storeys of the National Library
building Drama Centre is the landmark focal point for
the arts with the latest state-of-the art theatre facilities.
Its location within the library is a perfect demonstration
of our vision for a "Creative and Connected Singapore".
Built to effectively meet the need for a dedicated purpose-built
mid-sized theatre in Singapore, the new Drama Centre offers
a theatre, a black box, a VIP Lounge and three multi-purpose
function areas.
The theatre has 615 seats and features modern audio, visual
and lighting equipment. There is also a full power fly
system for scenery, the first in Singapore for a mid-sized
theatre. The black box is a cosy space with flexibility
for artists to configure based on their production needs,
and the multi-purpose rooms may be utilised for seminars,
meetings, art exhibitions and private functions.
To encourage and support our artists and arts groups,
we intend to keep the rental of the Drama Centre affordable
while sustaining the operation of the venue as viably
as we can. We therefore aim to raise $20 mil over the
next 10 years to meet these objectives.
The Singapore arts scene made notable progress over the
past decade in terms of audience size, activities, talents
and infrastructures etc. While there is government funding
for the non-profit organisations, there is a lack of dedicated
fund to support the commercial exploitation of arts products
and services.
The Banking on the Arts Fund is a venture capital fund
designed to provide access to finance for the arts industry.
It is dedicated to the commercial exploitation of products
and services generated by the arts businesses. It does
not make grants or soft loans but invest in strictly commercial
terms in the share capital of profit-making arts and creative
businesses.
There is a need for a new approach to expanding local
arts and cultural economies. A good financial instrument
has a key role to play in delivering financial resources
and services to the arts and creative industries which
in turn provide opportunities for growing employment.
National Arts Council's Arts Adoption initiative matches
prospective Sponsors with local Arts Groups that have
similar visions, missions and objectives. Benefits of
the scheme:
- Fantastic branding and association opportunity with
the arts and the arts group
- Good corporate citizenry - increasingly important
in a socially-conscious generation
- One complimentary performance/exhibition staged
for sponsor's corporate event
- Premium acknowledgement in all the performances
and exhibitions staged by the arts groups. (Exact
details of acknowledgements to be worked out with
respective arts groups and performance/event)
- Recognised under national Patron of the Arts Award
- Double-tax deduction (Applicable for cash sponsorship
only)
Developing and growing our local talents development is
vital. We need to constantly nurture and spur our artists
to greater heights of artistic achievements. Achieving
this takes much effort, time, inspiration, ideas and finances.
Many a time, local arts groups face high operation costs,
over and above cost required for staging performances
and exhibitions. This scheme helps to ease their financial
strain in order for them to concentrate on artistic development.
In addition to cash, your company could also impart expertise
such as marketing, corporate communications and human
resource to the adopted arts group. The partnership would
also allow both the company and arts groups to grow together.
