Established as one of Asia's leading arts festivals, the
Singapore Arts Festival gathers internationally acclaimed
and local artists annually in June for a month-long celebration
of cultural diversity and artistic innovation.
Seeking to entertain, enchant, inspire and impress, the
Festival presents among the best and latest in artistic
developments around the world, ranging from the classics
to the highly experimental. Increasingly, the Festival
is known for its embrace of the contemporary and cutting-edge
works by leading contemporary artists from Singapore,
Asia and beyond.
Singapore's premiere arts festival is the most anticipated
event in the local arts calendar. Programmes consist of
dance, theatre and music performances in formal theatres
and concert halls, fun-filled programmes for children
and families, as well as free outdoor events targeted
at the general public.
The Singapore Arts Festival attracts more than 700,000
people from Singapore and the region. It opened last year
at the Padang with a spectacular aerial performance by
an acclaimed Spanish group which alone drew 25,000 people.
Over the course of 4 weeks, 22 ticketed productions and
more than 400 free outdoor activities entertained and
inspired Singaporeans from all walks of life.
The Singapore Biennale is the nation's premier international
contemporary art event. This mega art exhibition draws
wide global attention, as it provides excellent opportunities
for local and international art communities, arts businesses
as well as diverse arts audiences to interact, collaborate
and be engaged in the world of contemporary art.
Wonder is the theme for SB2008. Through contemporary art,
Wonder calls on us to question and be curious; to reach
beyond the surface, surpassing the apparent and to allow
ourselves be surprised, awed, tantalised and challenged.
A major part of the Biennale programming involves cultivating
a deeper public engagement with contemporary arts. This
will be conducted through the Encounters series of talks,
workshops, artist residencies and events. In addition,
a series of education projects focusing on primary and
secondary school children will accompany the Biennale.
SB2008 promises to be refreshing and surprising for multiple
levels of audiences - local, regional and international,
paying special attention to outreach and education.
The inaugural Singapore Biennale in 2006 featured 95 artists
and artist collectives from 38 countries and regions across
a collection of 19 venues and attracted a total of 883,300
visitors over ten weeks. It excited Singaporeans about
contemporary art and got them engaged and inspired. On
the international front, it attracted strong participation
of international artists, artistic directors, curators,
critics, academics and biennale organisers. It was a critical
platform for exchange and dialogue between Singapore and
the global arts community; more than half of our participating
local artists were subsequently invited to showcase their
works around the world. Not only did it raise the profile
of Singapore art, it positioned Singapore strongly as
a vibrant global city for the arts and placed Singapore
on the world map.
Noise Singapore is a media-based festival of creativity
showcasing various arts talents in Singapore. This project
is initiated and supported by the National Arts Council
of Singapore. Noise Singapore is the Asian chapter of
Noise Australia, which originated in Australia in 2001.
Noise Singapore is a unique media-based festival, based
on the evolving relationship between consumers and technology,
the internet, digital downloads, mobile phones, gaming,
and the ever-converging media environment. This highly-accessible
festival focuses on the ever-converging relationship between
the youths and technology, by employing IT tools such
as the internet, digital services, mobile phones and software
in the creation, submission and/or showcase of original,
creative works by youths.
Noise Singapore 2006 received more than 2,455 entries
from more than 1,349 participants. Together with more
than 20 partners, it took the voice and ideas of Singaporean
youths to more than 1 million Singaporeans.
A fortnightly guide to the arts, Arts Beat is a comprehensive
listing of free and ticketed events in Singapore. It serves
as both a publicity and educational platform to create
awareness of the vibrant arts scene in Singapore. Arts
Beat is the publication for the progressive local arts
scene with its fresh layout and useful information. At
60,000 copies distributed fortnightly island wide at all
community clubs, libraries, cafes, schools and arts venues,
Arts Beat is available in both heartlands and downtown.
The arts community is very dependent on this publication
as an avenue for free publicity to reach out to potential
audience. Through strategic partnerships, this publication
could be further developed to be the key publication that
the public reads to find out what are the arts happenings
in Singapore.
As the world's oldest and one of the most prestigious
platforms for contemporary art practice, the Venice Biennale
International Art Exhibition presents several key opportunities
to showcase Singapore and make an impact in the international
contemporary art world.
The Singapore Pavilion at Venice Biennale is part of a
broad framework to nurture and develop visual arts practices
in Singapore. It showcases the strength and diversity
of Singapore artists and artistic practices internationally,
promotes awareness of Singapore's curatorial capabilities
and creates awareness of Singapore artists and their contribution
to the international art dialogue.
The year 2009 will mark Singapore's fifth consecutive
participation at the Biennale, in which each year some
5,000 people from the international arts community and
media visit the Biennale during its Vernissage period.
The Singapore Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale International
Art Exhibition will be held from June to November 2009.
The biennial National Piano & Violin Competition attracted
more than 250 entries in 2005 and it has been increasing
with each competition. It also reaches out to a large
local and regional audience. It is dedicated to develop
the performing skills of our young talents and to raise
the standards of musicianship. Furthermore, it is the
only platform that offers talented young Singapore musicians
to compete at a national level, and to perform before
an international jury.
This competition has successfully discovered and produced
talents such as the T'ang Quartet and Lee Huei Min (the
first young Asian classical violinist to recently sign
a recording contract with Universal). Several other identified
young talents have gone onto pursue music studies in renowned
music institutions such as The Yehudi Menuhin School (UK),
Chetham's School of Music (UK) and Peabody Conservatory
(US).
The National Piano & Violin Competition 2009 will be held
in December 2009.
The biennial National Indian Music Competition will take
place in 2008 to spot more of Singapore's burgeoning pool
of Indian music talents. Since the Competition started
in 1998, it has seen a three-fold increase in the number
of entries and brought new excellent talents in various
instruments into the fore of the local music scene. Winners
of the Competition also enjoy an immediate showcase of
their proficiency at the Prize Winners' Concert.
The Competition is organised by the National Arts Council
to develop and upgrade Singapore musicians' standards
and skills, as well as to identify potential talents in
Indian music. It also provides opportunities for musicians
to perform in a competitive situation, help nurture the
talent pool for Indian music in Singapore and sustain
the interest and appreciation of this ethnic art form.
It attracts over 90 participants and reaches out to more
than 1,000 audiences each time.
The National Indian Music Competition will be held in
September 2008.
The biennial National Chinese Music Competition will be
in 2008 as an exciting artistic platform to showcase the
range of Chinese music talents. The competition also aims
to promote Chinese music and provide opportunities for
musicians to perform in a competitive situation, before
an international jury.
Since the Competition was revamped in 1998, it has seen
a double-fold increase in the number of entries to a total
of 378 participants in year 2006. The standard of the
competition has also increased with winners performing
better repertoires and impressing judges with their skills.
This National Chinese Music Competition has been gaining
prominence in the Singapore Chinese music scene and it
reaches out to more than 3,000 audiences each time.
The National Chinese Music Competition will be held in
December 2008.
Occupying the 2nd to 6th storeys of the National Library
building Drama Centre is the landmark focal point for
the arts with the latest state-of-the art theatre facilities.
Its location within the library is a perfect demonstration
of our vision for a "Creative and Connected Singapore".
Built to effectively meet the need for a dedicated purpose-built
mid-sized theatre in Singapore, the new Drama Centre offers
a theatre, a black box, a VIP Lounge and three multi-purpose
function areas.
The theatre has 615 seats and features modern audio, visual
and lighting equipment. There is also a full power fly
system for scenery, the first in Singapore for a mid-sized
theatre. The black box is a cosy space with flexibility
for artists to configure based on their production needs,
and the multi-purpose rooms may be utilised for seminars,
meetings, art exhibitions and private functions.
To encourage and support our artists and arts groups,
we intend to keep the rental of the Drama Centre affordable
while sustaining the operation of the venue as viably
as we can. We therefore aim to raise $20 mil over the
next 10 years to meet these objectives.
The Singapore arts scene made notable progress over the
past decade in terms of audience size, activities, talents
and infrastructures etc. While there is government funding
for the non-profit organisations, there is a lack of dedicated
fund to support the commercial exploitation of arts products
and services.
The Banking on the Arts Fund is a venture capital fund
designed to provide access to finance for the arts industry.
It is dedicated to the commercial exploitation of products
and services generated by the arts businesses. It does
not make grants or soft loans but invest in strictly commercial
terms in the share capital of profit-making arts and creative
businesses.
There is a need for a new approach to expanding local
arts and cultural economies. A good financial instrument
has a key role to play in delivering financial resources
and services to the arts and creative industries which
in turn provide opportunities for growing employment.
National Arts Council's Arts Adoption initiative matches
prospective Sponsors with local Arts Groups that have
similar visions, missions and objectives. Benefits of
the scheme:
- Fantastic branding and association opportunity with
the arts and the arts group
- Good corporate citizenry - increasingly important
in a socially-conscious generation
- One complimentary performance/exhibition staged
for sponsor's corporate event
- Premium acknowledgement in all the performances
and exhibitions staged by the arts groups. (Exact
details of acknowledgements to be worked out with
respective arts groups and performance/event)
- Recognised under national Patron of the Arts Award
- Double-tax deduction (Applicable for cash sponsorship
only)
Developing and growing our local talents development is
vital. We need to constantly nurture and spur our artists
to greater heights of artistic achievements. Achieving
this takes much effort, time, inspiration, ideas and finances.
Many a time, local arts groups face high operation costs,
over and above cost required for staging performances
and exhibitions. This scheme helps to ease their financial
strain in order for them to concentrate on artistic development.
In addition to cash, your company could also impart expertise
such as marketing, corporate communications and human
resource to the adopted arts group. The partnership would
also allow both the company and arts groups to grow together.
