Singapore's literary arts scene has become more vibrant over the years and has flourished in Singapore's four official languages - English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Prominent figures in the literary landscape include Edwin Thumboo, Wong Meng Voon, Abdul Ghani Bin Abdul Hamid and Rama Kannabiran. Key organisations such as the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS) play an important role in promoting writing, reading and publishing in Singapore. In addition, there are literary associations in Singapore to nurture and groom new writers in all four languages.
The biennial Singapore Writers' Festival celebrates the literary word in the four offical languages and provides a platform for exchange and showcase of both local and international writers. In 2004, the Singapore Literature Prize made a welcome return and for the first time, gave recognition to the best published literary efforts in Chinese, Malay, and Tamil, in addition to English.
Singapore writers are also making their presence felt at international literary festivals such as the Man Hong Kong International Literary Festival, Edinburgh Book Festival and Adelaide Writers' Week, to name a few. Singapore authors works are also being published by international publishing houses.
More literary events such as poetry readings and poetry slams (dynamic performance poetry) have become more popular in Singapore in recent years. On-line literary journals have also flourished and there are over 10 literary arts societies registered in Singapore.
Various assistance and development resources are available to develop the local literary arts industry at all levels from the budding auteur and emerging publisher, to the established writer or publishing company:
