Dena Foundation Residency Programme (Paris, France) 2012 Application Guidelines

The National Arts Council (NAC) is calling for residency applications for an international residency programme at the Centre International d'Accueil et d'Echanges des Récollets Paris organized by the Dena Foundation which begins 1st September 2012. 

Under the partnership framework between NAC and the Dena Foundation, this 3-month residency programme aims to offer professional visual artists the opportunity to develop their practices, incubate new ideas for the advancement of contemporary art and encounter creative challenges within the context of the Dena Foundation residency and the international networking opportunities it presents. 

Successful applicants will receive funding for their roundtrip travel and provisions to undertake this programme that will cover the costs of accommodation, living expenses for their residency period, travel, studio and material costs.

Expectations

The selected artist(s) is expected to sign an agreement with the Dena Foundation which outlines certain expectations. These include:
  1. Artist(s) is to manage his/her time well at the Dena Foundation
  2. Artist(s) is to take charge of the work/project based on the residency application, and participating in the studio visits and other activities organized by the Dena Foundation for its artists-in-residence.
  3. Artist(s) may be provided with the opportunity to showcase his/her work in France and are expected to take full advantage of this.
  4. Artist(s) is to be responsible for their own health and safety during the residency period.

Funding

As part of the provisions to undertake this residency, NAC will be sponsoring:
  1. The artist's accommodation, associated costs with participation, production budget and per diem through the Dena Foundation.
  2. Up to EUR5,000 in exhibition costs in France organized by the Dena Foundation
  3. A grant of up to EUR2,000 to cover roundtrip travel costs to the residency.
  4. A grant of SGD5,000 to realize a post-residency presentation in Singapore.

Timing

The 3-month residency commences on 1st September 2012 and ends on 30th November 2012.

Residency Provisions (3-month residency)

  1. Lease of a studio and living space (30 sqm), plus basic equipment including electricity, heating, water usage and weekly cleaning services.
  2. Curatorial, administrative and technical support from the host institution, exhibition and publicity services (exhibition sitting, insurance, installation and de-installation, receptions and advertisements, public relations, invitations).
  3. Studio visits and mediation of contacts to international curators, collectors, art critics, institutions etc. for the artist.
  4. NAC grant to support round trip travel costs and living allowance, accommodation & studio rental, project development, artists' materials and possible related exhibition expenses.

Eligibility

Applicants must be professional visual artists who are Singaporean or Permanent Residents of Singapore.They should possess the following:
  1. A consistent and strong track record as a practising artist
  2. Participation in events of good standing
  3. Produced an independent body of work that demonstrates innovation and experimentation in contemporary visual arts practice and discourse
  4. Demonstrated commitment in their art practice in the local visual arts scene
  5. Ability to converse in French is preferred but not required.

Selection criteria

Artistic Excellence

  • Emerging to mid-career artists will be identified for their outstanding portfolio and potential to produce work of high artistic merit and their commitment to this purpose.

Engagement with the Visual Arts Scene

  • Applicants must display a high level of engagement in contemporary art practices and critical discourse.

Selection Process

Acceptance into the residency is based on a preliminary selection and recommendation by NAC followed by a decision by a jury organized by the Dena Foundation. Successful applicants will be notified in March 2012.

The closing date for applications is 17 February 2012. Applicants will be shortlisted based on their submitted application material:

  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Portfolio (digital images and/or video files)
  • 2 professional reference letters
  • Artist's statement of intent outlining what is to be developed during the residency and what the artist hopes to achieve by attending the Dena Foundation artist residency programme.

Direct applications by artists are not accepted by the Dena Foundation.
