Major Grant
The Major Grant Schemes are administered by the National Arts Council to support the development of registered arts organisations in Singapore through 1 or 2-year grants.
Application to the Major Grant Schemes is highly competitive. From 2009-11, an average of 16 organisations received the 1-year grant and 12 organisations received the 2-year grant. A total of $5.2m was awarded under the Schemes in 2011. For 2012, a similar amount of budget has been committed.
The schemes aim to develop a pool of viable, professional arts organisations that are hallmarks of artistic excellence in and beyond Singapore, and that are also embraced by Singaporeans for their role in expressing Singapore's cultural identity, values, heritage and aspirations. The arts organisations are to:
- Reflect the diversity and vibrancy of Singapore's culture and the arts through the work and programmes they create;
- Enrich the lives of audiences and the different segments of Singapore residents (including students, the elderly, families etc.);
- Contribute substantially to the development of artistic practices, professional expertise and young talent; and
- Achieve sound management of resources and better financial sustainability.
The support is intended to help the recipients make progress and develop strengths in all 5 areas below :
- Sustained Artistic Development and Quality Content/Programmes
- Active Engagement of Audiences and the Singapore Public
- Contribution to the Development of the Artform, Peers or Industry
- Sound Management Capabilities and Strong Governance
- Improved Financial Sustainability
