Overview | NAC Arts Venues | Arts Housing
Envisioned to serve as a unique focal point for arts activities in the heart of the city, the Waterloo Street Arts Belt was restored and developed over five years at an approximate cost of $7 million. The arts groups housed in this arts belt are ACTION Theatre, the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore, Dance Ensemble Singapore, Young Musicians' Society and Sculpture Square.
Besides serving the objective of arts housing, the arts belt plays a larger role of showcasing the vibrant arts scene in Singapore and providing space for talents to create and test their works. On this street alone, one could sample the works of various disciplines - music, dance, drama, sculpture and visual arts. The activities carried out by the five arts groups add character and vitality to the area, contributing positively to a vibrant and attractive environment.
The arts belt also serves as a synergistic link between nearby arts centres and institutions such as the Singapore Art Museum, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art, and the Stamford Arts Centre. The properties in this area include:

This cluster of three charming pre-war shophouses is occupied by the Young Musician's Society (YMS) Ltd, the umbrella body of Singapore Youth Choir and the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra. The Society plays a central role in raising the standard of musicianship in Singapore through its numerous concerts and competitions organised for schools and the public. The two music groups under its auspices are active participants of international festivals and often serve as cultural ambassadors for Singapore.
The Centre aims to serve as a musical hub for youths in Singapore, providing music education through classes, seminars and workshops. It also serves as an agency for liaison and cooperation among music organisations in Singapore and other such agencies and associations around the world. The Centre holds many music activities such as A Capella Fanatix, to provide opportunities for outstanding musicians to display their talents. In addition, it also serves as a resource centre for information on choral, band, orchestral (Western and Chinese) and instrumental music.
