Golden Point Award
Golden Point Award 2007The Golden Point Award (GPA) 2007 is Singapore's national and premiere creative writing competition. GPA is organised by the National Arts Council (NAC) and The Arts House, and sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings and the Singapore Press Holdings Foundation.

The GPA encourages and supports new writing for both short stories and poetry in the four major languages of Singapore - English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.

Aims of the GPA:
  • Identify new creative writing talent
  • Promote the art of creative writing
  • Encourage talented local writers to strive for the highest level of literary skill
  • Create a conducive environment for creative thinking and literary expression in Singapore
In 2007, the GPA will bring back the highly popular creative writing workshop series for aspiring writers and poets.

The GPA accepts only original and unpublished works. No prior experience in publishing or writing professionally is needed for interested participants.

Window for submissions: 24 April 2007 to 31 July 2007. The official entry form can be picked up at The Arts House Box Office (from 30 April 2007 onwards) or downloaded from The Arts House website.

Since 1992, the Golden Point Award has been a valuable platform for identifying and nurturing new literary talents in all four official languages in Singapore. Past winners who have carved out promising literary careers include Claire Tham, Alfian Sa’at, Cyril Wong, Young Artist Award recipient Tan Chee Lay, Denon Lim, Anuar Othman and Mohammad Farihan Bin Bahron, just to name a few.

The GPA has attracted talents from all walks of life. This year’s prize winners include retiree Poon Heng Wah, winner of the Chinese Poetry category, who, at 68 years old is the oldest prize winner of the competition while student Ma Huaqi, who won the English Short Story category, is the youngest at 25 years old. The competition also saw several first time participants who were also first prize winners: book distributor Colin Lee in the Chinese Short Story category, teacher Norlila binti Abdul Ghani in both the Malay Poetry and Short Story categories, and Rajendran Ramasamy in the Tamil short story category.

This year we received 769 entries from 720 participants.

We thank our sponsors and partners for making this event possible with their generous support, in particular, Singapore Press Holdings – a long-standing supporter of the Golden Point Award. We also wish all participants all the best in their literary endeavours and congratulate the 24 winners, who walked away with a total of $65,000 in cash.
