Marking a milestone as the first visual arts biennale ever held here, the
Singapore Biennale promises to be an interesting and exciting experience for the
local arts community, citizens and visitors alike. As a platform of
international art in dialogue with Singapore and Asia, the Biennale aims to
capture the spirit of creativity and encounters of art and city life, and
inspire interaction, generate new opportunities for artists and curators and
create new content in our arts scene.
The Singapore Biennale is a timely milestone to celebrate an active and busy art
scene. Over 500 exhibitions are held annually, with local artists and arts
groups making their mark both locally and internationally in important events,
such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta, India Triennale and Sao Paolo Biennale,
and receiving other prestigious accolades.
The inaugural Singapore Biennale 2006 (SB2006) kicks off from 4 September to 12
November 2006 (Vernissage: 1 - 3 September 2006). It is the anchor cultural
event for Singapore 2006 - Global City. World of Opportunities, the umbrella
event where Singapore plays host to the Annual Meetings of the Boards of
Governors of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group.
BELIEF is the theme for SB2006. In an era of social, political, and even
environment uncertainties, our beliefs are often questioned. SB2006 attempts to
address the complexities that surround the formation of our beliefs in relation
to society, history and humankind. Over 70 artists from all over the world will
converge on our island, showcasing their works in a myriad of venues from busy
commuter spaces, shopping malls to religious sites throughout the city. Artistic
Director Fumio Nanjo, internationally reputed for having headed the programming
and adjudication of major art events around the world, helms the inaugural
event. He is assisted by a team of four curators: Roger McDonald (Japan), Eugene
Tan (Singapore), Sharmini Pereira (Sri Lanka/United Kingdom) and Ahmad Mashadi
(Singapore).
