Overview

Organised by the National Arts Council, Singapore Art Show (SAS) aims to be a national platform for both established as well as up-and-coming local visual artists to showcase their latest artworks. It also serves as an important avenue for public appreciation of the diverse visual arts practices found in Singapore.

It will showcase artworks from various genres and medium by Singapore artists, as well as seek to engage the visual arts community in Singapore through outreach components, public art, platforms for the discovery of new talents, and prestigious awards.

SAS is part of an integrated framework of two exciting biennial visual arts platforms developed to provide expanded and diverse visual arts showcases in Singapore. The other is the Singapore Biennale which will focus on the development and presentation of South-east Asian and Asian contemporary art in the international scene. These two biennials aim to further nurture our visual arts talents, capabilities and audiences nationally, regionally, and internationally.

Singapore Art Show 2009

Art is here! Into its third edition, Singapore Art Show 2009 brings you an exciting smorgasbord of art offerings designed to invite, entice and trigger responses to the idea of art.

The flagship event, the Singapore Art Exhibition, is organised along a buffet of themes this year celebrating the diverse expressions and creativity of Singaporean artists. Garnering some 475 artwork entries via an open call, not more than 45 works will be selected for the exhibition, culminating in the awarding of two prizes, the Singapore Art Exhibition Prize, and the Voters’ Prize.

Curating Lab: 100 Objects (Remixed) is a key developmental platform, co-presented by NAC and the NUS Museum for young curators and tertiary students to be mentored in critical curatorial practices. It aims to generate greater awareness of the importance of such practices in the production of exhibitions and development of new ideas. Using an archive of 100 artworks from Singapore practitioners, participants will be guided towards developing their own curatorial vision, culminating in a large-scale exhibition and a publication, along with a series of workshops and talks.

In a major showcase of traditional and modern art forms, the Federation of Art Societies Singapore (FASS) will present The Call of Tradition spread over three venues: FASS (Kampong Eunos), Ngee Ann Cultural Centre and Black Earth Art Museum, featuring some 250 artists from over 200 art societies. Expect a plethora of art forms from ink paintings, calligraphy, seal carving, to watercolours, oil paintings, ceramics and sculptures, all testimony to how tradition continues to inform contemporary art today.

SAS 2009 seeks to continue expanding horizons and perceptions of art through developmental platforms such as Lost in the City – co-presented by National Museum of Singapore and NAC, it takes visitors on a tour of five emerging artists’ site-specific works which respond to the nightscape of Singapore in all its buzz, excitement, dislocation and doubt.

Taking art further beyond institutional walls is the launch of Public Art Showcase, a new NAC engagement initiative dedicated to raising awareness to art in public spaces across the island. The first edition takes the form of a map, Your Guide to Singapore’s Iconic Public Artworks, which spotlights between 50-60 of our most seminal public artworks. Marking the launch of the Showcase is The Amazing Art Find – an Amazing Race-style challenge in which contestants will race each other in a hunt to identify selected public artworks.

Your Guide to Singapore’s Iconic Public Artworks

With the sprouting of new art enclaves in Singapore, the public will be invited to discover them as Wessex Estate and Old School @ Mt Sophia both hold open houses over a weekend – fun-filled activities for both children and adults abound, including visits into the artists’ studios, buggy rides and art-dining at Wessex Estate. Gear up also for an Arts and Crafts Market organised by 2902 Gallery at Old School @ Mt Sophia, with activities lined up especially to appeal to families and the young at heart.

Kids and families can also expect new outreach programmes such as the SAS Student Art Competition for lower primary, upper primary and secondary students, and Art in the Works @ Raffles City, where anyone can try their hand at a range of art practices from ink painting and charcoal drawing to oil painting and glass engraving.

Back by popular demand, The SAS Unconference in speed dating format returns to engage the public through art conversations. Look forward also to a brand new Radio Substation Special on SAS 2009, bringing you short podcasts of previews, reviews, commentaries and interviews, including feedback from the public.
