A Celebration of Chinese Dance 2012 returns with yet another exciting series of showcase events, performances and training workshops. Organised by the National Arts Council with support from our partners, this festival showcases performances by some of the outstanding Chinese Dance groups in schools, alongside pieces by young dance talents, and well-known artists from Hong Kong and Beijing. In addition to the performance events, this festival also features a costume showcase and exhibition, and training workshops for local dancers to learn from the visiting dance practitioners.

Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Night 10 – Traces: Essence of Existence 《舞之思忖(十) - 神跡》- 福建会馆舞蹈团主办 Sunday, 15 July 3pm, 8pm University Cultural Centre Hall 50 Kent Ridge Crescent Synopsis The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Troupe celebrates its 10th biennial dance event with Traces: Essence of Existence, a night of unforgettable performances that showcases the beauty of Chinese dance. Choreographed by the group’s artistic director, Lim Moi Kim and resident choreographer, Jenny Neo, audiences will be treated to a wide variety of performances, from the classical Chinese dance forms to more contemporary set pieces. One of the highlight performances at this showcase is Essence of Existence, a unique choreography that brings together elements of Chinese cultural dance with traditional martial arts. Cadence- A Chinese Dance Showcase by Young Talents- Organised by National Arts Council 《舞韵》- 国家艺术理事会主办 Saturday, 4 August

50 Kent Ridge Crescent Synopsis Come and be captivated by our budding dancers who will present a series of Chinese folk and classical dance performances at this unique young talent showcase. Enjoy spectacular performances by award-winning primary and secondary schools, as well as select pieces by promising young dancers pursuing professional Chinese dance training overseas. Audiences will also be treated to a showcase by guest artist, Wu Kam Ming, a well-known dancer and choreographer from Hong Kong, as well as a special performance from the students of the festival’s training programme. 15-16 and 22-23 September Jurong Point 1 Jurong West Central 2 Saturday, 29 September Vivocity 1 Harbourfront Walk This event is a unique showcase of the vibrancy of Chinese Dance, through the colours and designs used in traditional folk dance costumes. Five community dance groups will come together to present folk dances of the different Chinese ethnic groups. The different characteristics and features of the dances and costumes will also be featured in an accompanying photo exhibition. Admission is free. |

Esteemed dancers, Cai Ying and Chen Lei, will conduct workshops for male and female dancers, from across intermediate and advance levels. These classes will allow Chinese dance enthusiasts to learn from these well-known overseas trainers, hone their technique and knowledge of the traditional art form. For dancers aged 13-30. About Cai Ying Cai Ying graduated from the Beijing Dance Academy with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2003, majoring in Chinese Dance. In 2008, she obtained her Master’s degree in Fine Arts (Dance) from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), majoring in Choreography. Her choreographies Sun of Snow Mountain (2006), Growing (2007) and Lotus (2008) received the Outstanding Choreography Award at the 8th Peach & Plum Cup Dance Competition, the Golden Award at the First Asia-Pacific Youth Arts Festival and the Originality (Choreography) meritous Award at the 4th Bauhinia Cup Hong Kong Dance Competition 2008. Cai Ying continues to develop new choreography, and is currently a lecturer in Chinese Dance at HKAPA. About Chen Lei Chen Lei graduated from the Beijing Dance Academy with a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Folks Dance in 2001. In 2002, he joined the Hong Kong Dance Company and assumed the position of Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Dance Company Youth Troupe in 2007. Chen Lei recently received a scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance fund, and is currently pursuing his Masters in Contemporary Dance Education and Choreography at Beijing Dance Academy. |
